Chapter 8
I walked into the diner on fifth street and looked around. My heart was racing. I was nervous to see Joey after all this time, after everything we'd been through, I just didn't know what I would say. I saw him right at the back of the cafe. I made my way over to the booth moving slowly. He stood up as I approached, he still had his midwestern manners. "Hi, Rosie", he nodded. There was a slight look of fear in his eyes as if he thought I was going to beat him up. I wanted to laugh, just because I'd had him beat up didn't mean I, myself, was violent. What did he think, I was going to pull out a gun and shoot him right in the middle of the diner for cheating? I wasn't that much of a loser.
"Hey Joey, good to see you." I chewed on my lower lip, that was a lie, but I was polite, if nothing else.
"Would you like to sit?" he was polite as well.
"Thanks." I slid into the booth, watched as he sat down. As I stared into his big blue eyes, I was reminded of how handsome he was. His floppy gold hair, his big white grin. He really was the All-American boy. So handsome. So trustworthy. At least in looks. I knew better than to believe that now, though.
"I was surprised when I heard from you." I leaned forward my elbows on the table. I figured I might as well get down to business. This wasn't a social occasion.
"I was surprised to hear back from you." He nodded, he didn't lean forward though. I was surprised. He tapped his fingers against the table for a couple of seconds. "Are you hungry? You want some breakfast?"
"I could eat." I nodded. "Is the food good here?"
"I don't know. I've never been before." He shrugged and handed me a menu. I thanked him and opened it.
This was weird, we were having such inane small talk. None of this mattered, who cared if the food was good? My stomach growled as I looked at the photos of pancakes and omelets, I wanted it all.
"What are you getting?", I looked up at him.
"Most probably some porridge and boiled eggs." He flexed his muscles and I tried not to roll my eyes. I didnât want to make him upset.
"Oh, okay." Boring, I thought to myself. Though, I guess that was how he kept his good figure; which was basically all that he had going for him.
"What about you?"
âI think I'll get some blueberry pancakes with chocolate chips and a fried egg, and sausage, and bacon, and some toast." I shrugged. âOh and maybe some grilled tomatoes if they have them. Ooh. I wonder if they have fried green tomatoes. That would be delicious. I don't know.â I could see his eyes glazing over as I went on about food and it made me want to continue. I could tell he was bored by my conversation, but I didnât care.
